Got a letter this morning saying my Natwest overdraft (outside the interest free student-y bit) is now going to be close to 20%. It was 5%. >_< ouch ... better make sure you're not in it then! Although you'll probs find that most other banks have similar rates for unauthorised overdraft use. Regards Natwest, I've had an account with for, oooh, 18 years!! And I've never really had a problem. Their online banking is excellent and the one issue I did have, when someone stole £4k from my account, was sorted without much hassle. Even the ISA transfer I did with them this year was relatively painless, unlike the ING / A&L transfer that I did the year before which was an absolute nightmare!

Although you'll probs find that most other banks have similar rates for unauthorised overdraft use. This isn't even for unauthorised use! It's just for the "standard" overdraft... I've got £x as an overdraft available, and a quarter of that is interest free (due to it being a graduate account)... The rest of it is now set at about 20%. I dread to think what the unauthorised charge is gonna be!!

that's madness ... I'd be tempted to get a credit card with a balance transfer / purchase interest free period and use a credit card cheque to credit your bank and then take the interest free period to pay it off on the credit card (making sure you don't use it to buy anything).

that's a shame, but I guess not surprising given your struggles to find a job ... I tell you what, it was the best thing I did two years ago when I really concentrated on money ... what I get in and what goes out and portioning off money to pay for all the bills, food, petrol etc. It really helps me keep on top of things. I've not been into my overdraft since. Of course it helps getting a salary, but I'm sure you could do something similar to manage your debts.

The bank 'lost' £200 of my money a couple of weeks a go!
It's been sorted now, thank god... but briefly: I paid in CASH of £200 at the Barclays in Kings Cross (mistake) I check my balance, and it reads a much smaller amount than it should do. I go in, get a statement, it says "paid in £200" then just below it "remit £200" I ask them about this, they tell me to phone up. No, I wouldn't expect an employee of the bank to be able to actually give me any banking advice beyond phone up... of course not. So I do, and their explanation is (after lots and lots of talking, hold music, transfers, and "can i speak to your managers") "Your paying in slip was illegible, so we couldn't pay the money in to your account."
OK so I have a few issues with this. 1) They DID pay it in. It was on my statement. It went back out three days later. 2) I didn't write a paying in slip. I used the counter, they took my card, gave me a receipt, job done. 3) EVEN IF I HAD WRITTEN A SLIP AND USED THEIR SELF SERVICE GUBBINS you write down a phone number on the envelope. Why would they not have contacted me to clarify the situation? It would have just been £200 lost somewhere in the system... That's a tad worrying to me.
So. Now I am actually getting to the point where I am scared of using my bank! Not even just the self help shit which looks dodge anyway. I went through a Barclays employee and handed him over physical cash money! How can you possibly cock up that situation?! I get paid cash, and I would love to cancel my account and just get a paypoint or pay as you go phone instead of using the banks, but unfortunately SLC wont give me my student loan in cash (I asked them once, after a lovely lady on the phone explained that the system was rubbish, i was entitled to less than i should get, and that yes she agreed banks were evil) so the bank account must remain. As soon as I move house, I'm changing everything. Barclays can go and take a long walk off of a short pier.

All Jobseekers money goes into my bank, which goes out to pay for my bills (Just about covers it, provided I keep below my mobile allowance)... Any money I get from shifts at the pub/any other work I can do goes on myself... As of a few weeks ago I was *REALLY* struggling as I didn't have my pub job, but right now I think I'll be ok... Provided I don't get dragged back into the overdraft...
