Sooooo today's the day existing iPhone customers can upgrade to the 3G version coming out on Friday.
I've already spoken to the people at o2, and due to the way they're working, I've gotta fork out a hundred quid right now, and my account will be reimbursed afterwards (I'm supposed to pay £100 for an upgrade but I wangled a free one from the people on the phone ).
AAaaaaaanyway, you're supposed to do it online. Only, you can't. Because o2 couldn't organise an orgy in a brothel. They sent out 200,000 text messages to people who registered their interest in the 3G iPhone, saying you could order them from 8am this morning.
Now... Common sense would say that if you send out 200,000 text messages, you'd need to make sure your website can cope with the potential of 200,000 orders. Right? Wrong!
First off, you need to get onto the website, which has been challenging enough. Then you need to get them to text you an 'upgrade code', which is a pain in the arse, as I now have 7. Once you have that, you type it in and it's supposed to take you to an order page. If you make it through to that, you can then successfully order your phone!!!
Or not.
I've been trying since 8am to order my frigging phone, but each time the website effectively dies on me. I've gotten to about 5 order screens, each time saying "There has been a problem with your order, please try again", but when I try again I've gotta go through the WHOLE process once more.
Honestly, would it really have been so hard to text those who're currently using an iPhone to say "upgrade today", then tomorrow new customers to say "Buy today", then the rest of the 200,000 to say "Buy today" on Weds? At the end of the day, I want to give them money (For the time being anyway)... Why are they stopping me?!
