What a joke! So last month I completed my Student Loan application, which took forever, on paper rather then online which I was advised to do as the online process requires a lot of forms being send back and forth, blah blah...
So anyway did that, and on the form it said to go to the 'LA Finder' on the Student Finance Direct website. Got the address, sent it off first class mail, done.
Except, hadn't heard anything for over a month. Just called them, getting a bit worried...well, it turns out the address on the website is WRONG and unless it's sent via recorded delivery, they won't forward it on.
Not only have I missed the deadline to recieve my loan for the start of term, that application form had my birth certificate, and complete life story (address, previous address, bank details...) in it. I work in Fraud for RBS at the moment, so I know exactly how dangerous that is.
I really don't know what to do...

what address has it gone to then? is it somewhere completely unrelated to student loans?
if they've got the address wrong then your docs are their responsibility, keep on at them at the phone.

The address on the website was: SFD Processing Unit PO Box 89 DARLINGTON DL1 9AZ And apparently is now: SFD Processing Unit Linfield Point McMullen Road Darlington DL1 1RW God knows where it's gone, the operator just said 'we don't usually get them forwarded on unless its recorded delivery so do another application'. I was to shocked to say anything but ok, and after given it some thought afterwards have pretty much entered brown trouser time.

i would be back on the phone to them, asking them to speak to a manager of some sort and getting them to find out where your application form is. If the address was wrong on their own site, it was their fault so they should be held responsible for the problems resulting.
no problems doing another application but i would be going all out to get them to find your original one given the private data it had in it.
Mind you, I'm not sure I woulda mailed that much personal information without using recorded delivery ... but then, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I second what Pete said - if their own website was wrong, it's their problem.
Seriously, keep badgering them. If there's one thing people listen to it's a phone constantly ringing asking the same thing.

Hmm well I spoke to my dad, who is a director of Direct-Gov (ya know the one), and he spoke to the head of Student Loans Direct as he's on his e-mail system. Turns out the girl told a little white lie because basically, a LOT of these applications go missing in a mass of paperwork and in truth they have no idea where it is. Basically though it's not in a bin or on a train somewhere, at least it's kinda out of harms way. And he also said by way of an apology he will give me four weeks to complete another application and make sure it's fasttracked so I am able to recieve my loan in time for term.

what about your birth certificate and stuff though? Well as I say it's alledgely buried in paperwork in a secure place rather then in a bin somewhere so shouldn't expect to be worried... The birth certificate was a copy of which I still have two more, and trust me the next will be going recorded delivery.

.... And so I got my birth certificate back (both of them!) with a declaration form that I had to sign and have someone that I've known for 2 years sign...ok so I did that, and learning from my past errors sent it back 24 recorded delivery. Two weeks go by, I've heard nothing, so (after being on hold for 25 minutes), I call them to find out what is going on, as I'm moving to the Uni tomorrow....guess what? They "haven't recieved the declaration form", and they're sending another one. I'm starting to doubt if I'm ever going to be able to go at all

did you check the recorded delivery number via the Post Office website ? That will show whether it was received or not. If it wasn't received then you should claim the postage back from the Post Office.

I'm starting to doubt if I'm ever going to be able to go at all *echos what Pete said* but don't worry about not being able to go... most student unions will have a fund to help out students who have had problems, you should be able to defer tuition fees, and possibly get a small grant to help you out with rent and general living costs until your loan comes through - might be worth getting in touch with them if you don't think this'll all get sorted in time.

Ath, you need to see someone. I got pissed at these guys, sent me a confirmation saying my loan is sorted, then opened a letter months later to say i needed to sign a form to confirm it. FOOLS!

Hmm well I'm now living in halls, pretty fun...
Loan is still "processing", kicked off yesterday and they promised a call back within 3-4 working days so should all be ok..
I also checked it as you said Pete, and that's when I kicked off (because it had definately been signed for).
