ok, I couldn't see anything similar to this... these are some bands that I have been 'meaning to listen to properly' for at least the last five years, and for whatever reason have never gotten around to it: arcade fire british sea power the velvet underground (I know this is uncool to admit) if you know them, tell me where to start. or not to bother. and add your own for other people to help you with. hopefully

Cool idea.
Ok British Sea Power great band i got into them quite a few years ago after somehow listening to remember me. But id recommend 'Do you like Rock Music' if your gonna buy a whole album, all the songs are quite interesting its just good song after good song on that album. Atom and Canvey island being two of the best.
Have never really listened to the velvet underground.
Arcade fire= really good!!! I bought Neon bible after hearing so much hype and it lived up to it. Funeral is also i really good album that i haven't listened to enough times to really soak it in yet.
Black Wave / Bad Vibrations, Ocean Of Noise and My Body Is A Cage are all ace! go have a listen on youtube a few times and you will probably like.
As for me... someone also tell me about The Velvet Underground.
And.. um... Manic Street Preachers. Placebo and Oceansize. Id like to know more about all those.

I'm afraid I don't know many bands you lot don't know. I listen a lot to Feeder, ManOrMouse and Sandstone Veterans. But there might be these two bands you don't know: The Subways: Very rock&roll music. Try I Want To Hear What You've Got To Say and Mary. Kensington: They're a Dutch band, but sound somewhere in between british and american rock. Very cool. Check out Youth, Franklin Exits and Man/Mission/Mayhem on youtube. This thread is a good idea. I'd like to know more good bands

I'll just list what I think are the best 3 albums, excluding Feeder of course! They're all heavy metal and all from the 80s, which for me was the very best era for music. I don't expect many to agree with me here, but I think metal is far more rewarding and pleasurable to listen to than mainstream indie rubbish. Each to their own though, right? If anyone else on this forum has listened to these albums then I'd be really interested to know what you think, but I do consider these to be 'up there' with essential music listening, especially for the genre.
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime - Widely regarded as the greatest concept album of all time, it's classic Seattle heavy metal with an amazing 'story', catchy riffs and has Geoff Tate at his best. It is so difficult to pick a best song, but the general favourites are Operation Mindcrime, I Don't Believe In Love and Eyes of a Stranger, though I'd argue the epic Suite Sister Mary and Spreading the Disease are better listens in the long-run, and of course the epic three-piece intro of I remember Now, Anarchy X and Revolution Calling really set the tone for the album. Recommended for anyone who can stand classic heavy metal.
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast - Classic New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) album, it contains two of the greatest heavy metal songs ever (Number of the Beast and Hallowed Be Thy Name) as well as fan-favourites Children of the Damned and 22 Acacia Avenue. Though Gangland is actually crap, the rest of the album shines through as a classic and again I'd recommend it to anyone who likes decent heavy metal... though I suspect those who do should already know about this album!
Dream Theater - Images and Words - Probably won't be to everyone's tastes, but this Progressive Heavy Metal album is DT at their very best. Excellent, lengthy and well-written songs flood this album and the whole 'progressive'-ness of it makes it musically exceptional. Vocalist LaBrie is at his best on this album too (has rarely been the same since) despite some of the lyrics being nearly incomprehensible. Such stand-out tracks for me are Pull Me Under, Take The Time and the two-track finish Wait for Sleep and Learning to Live, which contains a ridiculously epic bridge/break/close (whatever you want to call them) and a ridiculous high note from LaBrie. Recommended to those looking to experiment with their music tastes and perhaps want to delve into the progressive market.

Black Wave / Bad Vibrations, Ocean Of Noise and My Body Is A Cage are all ace! go have a listen on youtube a few times and you will probably like. exactly what I wanted, thanks! I'll queue it all up. And.. um... Manic Street Preachers. there are probably people here who can discuss their massive catalogue and history better than I can, because they seem to be invisible outside the UK, like that other band we know. so I'll just tell you what I've listened to and liked. the first song I heard was 'if you tolerate this then your children will be next', so the album I started with was 'this is my truth tell me yours'. then worked backwards through everything must go, the holy bible, and gold against the soul. I like all of these a lot, though they're quite different. I don't like trying to describe music, so here's two songs from each you can scavenge from somewhere: sleepflower, la tristesse durera, yes, faster, design for life, small black flowers that grow in the sky, if you tolerate this, ready for drowning. it's nothing recent (90s, but I wasn't introduced to it til later anyway), but I'd say it's what you need to hear to get an idea of the band. I did get 'journal for plague lovers' from last year, but I've only listened to half of it properly. if we're lucky I may get through the rest of it in the fortnight before their next one is out. (they also did three versions of um-ber-ella and made it stay in my head for days, the bastards.)

There was a brief thread here - feederfansite.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=4175&page=1 - where some listed a few favourites. The first one I mentioned was British Sea Power! Although it has a few good songs, I'm not a big fan of their newest album, but their debut, The Decline Of... is one of my all-time favourites. With Arcade Fire I like their first two albums (including the EP), but am not a fan of anything else, though I haven't heard their newest. With The Velvet Underground you may as well start off with The Velvet Underground & Nico if you haven't already. Secret Machines are probably another band you should check out. I know there are a few artists who I wouldn't know where to start with, but I can't think of any at the moment...

Cool idea. And.. um... Manic Street Preachers. Placebo and Oceansize. Id like to know more about all those. Oceansize only (currently) have three albums and a couple of EP's. I wouldn't even be able to tell you which album you'd be best starting with because they are all phenomenal. My favourite is Frames, their latest. It seems a little more thought out and complete than both Effloresce and Everyone Into Position. I'll go hunt a few videos for you on the 'tube though! Here we go: This is an edit of Unfamiliar from Frames. The album edit is a couple of minutes longer. this is a live vid of Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions, also from Frames. A wee bit heavier but muchos awesome. Promo vid from Catalyst, this is an edit from the album Effloresce; And finally one from their second album, Everyone Into Position, New Pin (though if you can find them check out Heaven Alive and Homage to Shame - the best two tracks fae that album. If you have money to burn then the live collection is an excellent buy - they are fantastic live, and the set comprises of three DVD's - each album live, and then a load of extra features.

I listened to Journal for Plague Lovers for the first time in a while recently and I'm beginning to think it's pretty good.
I think the Forever Delayed compilation is the best starting point for the Manics - it's possible they haven't released a bad single, and I've seen it for £3 in online sales. My recommended studio album would be Gold Against the Soul, but I'd agree with Chloe and say Send Away the Tigers is up there.

And.. um... Manic Street Preachers. Placebo and Oceansize. Id like to know more about all those. Everyone i know who likes Oceansize has got into them via a different album, so you could start with any to be honest. I personally heard Everone Into Position first, followed by Effloresce. The 4th album is out now, but i'd recommend you try one of the first 3 to start with.

You all remember Tom Windrif from Sandstone Veterans? Well, he started a new band in France, the Generous Thieves. They're quite good, especially the song Shadow Show. www.myspace.com/thegenerousthieves

I agree with the Potrogue; Wolfgang Parker IS sexy. I'll just post some stuff up here as well: The Marquis of Vaudeville! These guys are quite big in the States, and they deserve to expand, if I say so myself. myspace.com/marquisofvaudevilleAlso, some music by Dutch artists: Racoon makes some seriously good music, and Caro Emerald is currently invading the charts with her blend of pop music and ballroom jazz. Talk about sexy music!
