Sung clear and crisp, these lyrics are easy to make out, so no ambiguities here.
However, as I got the official lyric sheet from Pledge, this should save someone else the bother of transcribing...
V1:
Vacuum instability
A new universe may come
Will all this be forgotten?
Balance and new symmetry
Generating life for everyone
They're selling tickets
To see the moon
Now aeroplanes fly higher
Spirits free and lifted
There's something in the atmosphere
We wonder what it's like amongst the stars
The stars
CH:
Perfect lines get washed away
Like chalk on pavements when it rains
I'm hoping that we see the signs
The broken glass along the way
Reminded when we take a fall
The ghost inside us makes a call
It's silent
Silent in space
V2:
We try to find new remedies
Comfort for the mind
Something to hold onto
Weightlessness and gravity
Who will be the first to cut the wire
The wire
CH REPEAT
MIDDLE 8:
Perfect lines get washed away
Like chalk on pavements when it rains
I'm hoping that we see the signs along the way
CH REPEAT
MIDDLE 8 REPEAT
END
Interesting that the chorus seems originally to have been "Silence" rather than "Silent" in space, but it's been scribbled out.
ANALYSIS / MEANING:
For a song called 'Silence in Space', it has a surprisingly uplifting mood. The titular quiet and isolation, then, is something to be embraced rather than avoided.
It seems to be a song about order and chaos, and how they go hand-in-hand. Perfect lines (order) get washed away (chaos). Such juxtapositions are plentiful; in the first verse we get both "instability" and "symmetry", in the second we get both "weightlessness" and "gravity".
There's also a section that compares science ("tickets to see the moon... aeroplanes fly higher") with faith ("spirits free and lifted").
Overall then, the song seems to be saying that the world we live in is a confusing mix of order, chaos, science and faith. We have to embrace this maelstrom, go with the flow, and do our best to avoid any "broken glass along the way".
Cheers.
