I collect Feeder stuff but otherwise I’m not really a vinyl junkie (I prefer the quality of CDs).
I was talking about my Feeder stuff to a vinyl-loving friend of mine, and the subject of picture discs cropped up; I commented that Feeder had released a couple.
My mate advised me to take the discs out of the clear plastic sleeves they came in, as apparently there’s a chance that the clear plastic does some sort of chemical reaction with the surface of the vinyl and damages the record irreparably over time.
Lots of old picture discs and other records kept in plastic sleeves eventually degrade, and after looking around a few vinyl forums this seems to be a common issue.
This would affect Feeling A Moment, Shatter/Tender, and the RSD Forget About Tomorrow (not a picture disc, but it was packaged in a clear plastic sleeve).
So yeah, the advice was to buy new sleeves for these three singles, and stop them going all manky in future.
This is probably old news, but I thought I’d mention it here anyway!

Hey There!
Funny you should mention, as I have just bought the shatter and feeling a moment picture discs on the weekend from a collection sale. Also got the FAB/JTWIF 7" on RSD this year too.
I have tried reading through this before, a lot of conversation.. including the types of plastic and whether this only affects the vinyl with direct contact or whether it can also affect the vinyl that has a paper sleeve with the plastic as an outer cover.
Some question over the type of plastic too.. supposedly PVC is the culprit (thicker/harder plastic) rather than other softer thinner plastics. How you tell these apart in reality is another question!
Personally, I think it is all down to the environment that records are stored in, cool and dry, with a low rate of temperature change.. and I don't think you can go wrong really. Saying that, I could be tempted to buy some paper covers for my records with a plastic only sleeve.
Slightly related question, is the sleeve for the feeling a moment picture disc generic with just a blank barcode sticker?

Thanks - I wasn't aware of that. My picture discs are safely pinned to my wall (and have been since they were released). I was planning on covering them at some point, so I'll have to look into what sort of clear plastic to use.

Interesting, in 20 years of record collecting, I'd never heard this ...

I was planning on covering them at some point, so I'll have to look into what sort of clear plastic to use. I don't know if this is related to the degradation, but I was removing some vinyl from my wall earlier. Most of it was coloured, and there were no issues. A picture disc, however, was stuck to the wall! I'm attempting to remove the bits of paint now. And no, it wasn't wet when I put the vinyl up. Also, I didn't realise how much white vinyl Feeder had released over the years. It's definitely helped with my red and white (representing Stoke City) section, though I do have two copies of Find the Colour for some reason.
