The Large Hadron Collider fired successfully today. It didn't create a black hole that ingested the planet and killed us all, so all the mindless, clueless, idiotic meddling jobsworths who tried to stop it firing, can get back to being mindless, clueless idiotic meddlers in their everyday lives instead of doing it on the public stage and trying to stop important scientific experiments going ahead. Discuss.

I find it amazing that this thing is actually going to create mini black holes... That in itself is just... Wow!
But yeah, "ZOMG WE IZ GONNA DIIIIEEEEEEEEEE" usually switches me off from a convo...

I get so frustrated with people sometimes. There people who were genuinely scared of the start-up today, which is a shame. What should have been a nice story about the biggest experiment ever has gotten inextricably linked to "possibly world-destroying" in the world-mind. It's a real downer. Once again it's the media dumbing science down so much that it practically distorts it, as happened with the whole human-animal hybrid embryo debate. As for micro black holes - they're not going to form at the LHC. The LHC safety site @ public.web.cern.ch/public/en/LHC/Safety-en.html gives more info on why. Obviously someone heard about the micro black holes theory, took it as fact and it's spread from there. Oh, and allegedly someone killed themselves over it: www.rediff.com/news/2008/sep/10end.htmTop candidate for a Darwin award surely?

woah a girl actually killed herself? tbh in my opinion if the world is gonna end then the world is gonna end we can't stop it when it happens (if it ever does ), but i totally forgot about this today, i knew the world ending over this would be a load of turd. ;D

i hate it when people go on about the world ending too. it is a genuine shame when people believe it's going to happen, but i normally read about through internet rumours and people at school talking about it. in which case, i don't listen and i just think they're all idiots. so yeah basically the experiment has started well and it's very exciting for the scientific community. Science FTW!

This is probably the only time ever that JW's will be able to say "I told you so."

'Can I have a train set that may or may not end the world?'
'Hmmm, how about a bike?'

It's everybody for themselves. I'm starting my own little colony out in the Fens. We trade with bits of bone and the prettiest of our young girls (and some times boys.) It is a tough life, but we make it through with moonshine and wild, wild cannibal parties and ritualistic sacrifices.
We also worship Paul Daniels.

From the wiki entry: On 19 September 2008, the operations were halted due to a serious fault between two superconducting bending magnets. Now if they'd have let The Stig take it round the track it wouldn't have broken.....
