if people are gonna rely on the 6 o'clock news and the tabloids for the real deal on the economy then they only have themselves to blame!

if people are gonna rely on the 6 o'clock news and the tabloids for the real deal on the economy then they only have themselves to blame! THIS is what I meant by buzz words. Credit Crunch in particular is a phrase coined by the media, and to me doesn't really relay how serious the issue is. My comment on ignorant tits pretty much applies to those people you just described. If somebody came up to me and said the following.. "So this credit crunch eh? messy" or "so this financial crisis eh? messy" I think I'd be a tad more worried in to the second, really. And I actually do think scaremongering has a part to play in this. Yes, this situation we are in is serious. More so for some than others, but creating mass panic and hysteria will solve nobodies problems. As has already been said, people are forming opinions based on the news, the tabloids, and these buzzwords when anybody can lumber in "credit crunch" in to a sentence, but do they actually know what the hell is going on? No. They get the "dire news" from the BBC, can apply it to the buzzword and miss out the important facts which could help them, or at least help them gain a better understanding of the situation.

Courtesy of todays Countdown ... the term "Credit Crunch" has been in use since 1966, according to the dictionary, as a term to describe a shortage of money or credit. So, it ain't a new term nor a buzzword.

no but it's a word which has been picked up by the media for use with the simple/trusting folk. and if this is all so serious it's hardly just "a shortage of cash."
I'm not finding it difficult to find work because of "a shortage of cash", and large amounts of peterboroughs working population isn;'t being laid of because of "a shortage of cash"

The definition is pretty irrelevant really, its just one of many words like terrorism etc that get blurted out at regular intervals by the media. I mean look at the 'Baby P' press. The coverage has been huge and theres loads of uproar etc. It's obviously a terrible thing but whenever this happens to one child over here we seem to forget about all the children being mamed and killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. If we were being told about it everyday on the news then maybe people would care more. The media just tells us about what we want to hear.

nothing wrong with countdown! Without Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman? There's everything wrong with it! Vorders is still on it. Obviously not for much longer, which will be a shame, but the show format is good. I like the challenge no but it's a word which has been picked up by the media for use with the simple/trusting folk. and if this is all so serious it's hardly just "a shortage of cash." I'm not finding it difficult to find work because of "a shortage of cash", and large amounts of peterboroughs working population isn;'t being laid of because of "a shortage of cash" "shortage of cash or credit" And yes, that *is* why you can't find work. If companies don't have cash or can't get credit to get cash, then they can't employ people. It's that simple!!!

No, it's not that simple unless you simplify it... which is the point of the buzzwords, so people understand it in those simplest of terms which leads me back to my point - it's not that simple and people thinking it is because media told them so is detrimental to the situation. My dad comes home and says "why haven't you got a job yet" and I say "shortage of cash" it doesn't explain anything does it! Saying shortage of cash/credit doesn't even begin to describe how serious the situation is, as you said so yourself!
