OK I'm sure there is some incredible reason for this VAT change that I'm just too uninterested in to find out. Couldn't care less as I never have any money to spend. The gist I got of it was that we all save money, yay! However. Rant time. This was going to be a rant at Zavvi but a lot of places have been having trouble with this. so I'm just going to rant about the VAT change. THANK YOU GOV, I NOW HAVE TO GIVE CHANGE IN PENNIES! Prices at £9.99, simple. One peny change, receipt is in the bag, job's a good'un. Now all the prices are just hideous. Yesterday I had to give somebody 99p in pennies because I had no change left and they refused to give me the 1p! Pennies all over the shop, and working out VAT reductions on unmarked items or wrongly tagged items is just a nightmare! Thankfully our tills have been sorted to automatically reduce most products, but there was still a fair bit of calculator bashing at times. From what I've gathered this VAT change will only affect large spends? Most of the time people were saying "keep the change" so I guess the VAT thing is having very little affect on people buying small items. It's just fucking up my till, and everybody elses till in high street shops apparently SO. Any thoughts on the new VAT? Has anybody really noticed a difference except for a huge pocket full of shrapnel?

I noticed the difference in the work canteen yesterday ... it's a good thing for the consumer, money is money, whether it's shrapnel or not. I do think it's probs not so good for the retailer as they've had to re-price everything, which is a bit of a pain and probably had an inherent cost associated. I suspect I will notice the difference on the total bill for Christmas presents etc

I've noticed it while doing my Christmas shopping - most things have been reduced by a small but noticeable amount. I rather like it.

It's a complete pain in the backside for me, we were given 5 pages worth of changes yesterday........ridiculous stuff like call rates......daytime calls through us used to be 4p per minute......now it's 3.91 pence.......stuff like that. And when you're supposed to be able to relay this info at the drop of a hat, it doesn't create a good impression when you have to put a customer on hold, just so you can work out how much they're going to be saving with the new VAT rates on everything.

ok so we got our change order today, meaning we weren't raped with pennies...
however the new problem, which I'm guessing is an issue for any retailer who do any kind of basket spend/special offer, is that these are usually automatic reductions placed on the till, which have all been changed.
I don't know the situation else where but at Zavvi, we have a sheet of barcodes for various offers which takes off a certain ammount under a certain code - only other way to do it is price override which doesn't show up so we get the wrong figures for offers sold at the end of the day. Now the VAT change has screwed all that up, so we're having to work out lots of silly little ammounts to reduce things by the right ammount and it's getting incredibly silly!
perhaps other places have been more prepared for this, i don't know. Zavvi's preperation went as far as sticking a conversion table up for standard prices, i.e. "9.99 is now ....., 10.99 is now...."

fives and tens are easy, it's like that if you pay in Euro's. Nobody ever bothers with ones or two's in Europe. This 99p thing seems to be a british and American phenomenon!
Well I suppose the equivalent in Europe is 95cents so thats not strictly true.
Day offfffff today, no more messing around with pennies and barcodes and calculators which dont work! Hopefully by friday they'll have fixed it all in time for Saturday rush.

We (Game) have kept everything priced the same and the price is made cheaper at the till. It is an absolute pain in the arse suddenly needing change, when we have none. So many customers have left 10p or so short, luckily no one has been fickle enough to kick up a fuss. Don't spose Game are complaining mind!

Our change order has been sorted now, but we do keep getting short during the day and it takes forever for management to sort out more for us! Zavvi are moaning at our tills being up or down though. It's a nightmare to cash up at the end of the day apparently, and this is our fault somehow. lovely of them.

so glad i'm not working as a christmas temp this year! you have my sympathy
i reckon all-in-all i saved about 1.50 last week when shopping in leeds, 10p off here and 12p off there, it does all add up. but yes, you're not gonna notice a huge difference when shopping unless you're buying a massive item. thats really why they've done it, to encourage people to make the larger purchases despite the current economic situation
