SMEG! What the smeggin' smeg's the smeggin' smegger done?! The immortal words of David Lister, which many many Red Dwarf fans I imagine are uttering under their breaths, aimed at Doug Naylor... Whoever thought that plot was a good idea deserves lynching. The constant plugs for the channel, and everything else just grated at me beyond belief, and the scene on the set of Corrie just... Well. I actually shouted "Fuck right off" quite loudly. I'd waited until tonight to watch it with a few mates, and they were all equally as horrified. I would have had ZERO problem with it if they came back to earth in the present day and THAT WAS IT, but the whole "other" thing with the whole "We're not real, we're from a TV show" was just... Hideous. RIP Red Dwarf. 1989 - 2009. On life support since Series 8.

Tbh
I liked it.
I've been a fan all my life and it was such a relief to see them on our screens again.
It was actually funny, though some didn't get the subtle humour of it. Some find it hard without laugh tracks xD Some parts had me rolling around on the sofa (Listers toilet adventure, Rimmer's non-murder of bartikovski, when they went into the corner shop and started speaking in manc dialects... I wasn't expecting rimmer to burst out with 'Aye love' and just when the scanner confirmed that rimmer was 'Bit Crap')
This anniversary special was definately more dramatic than it maybe should have been. But then again it was a Celebration of red dwarf, it was for the fans who've waited these long ten years for them to return.
Plot wise, yes it had holes and yes, it could have been more original but this is hopefully a stepping stone for a new series. Doug will get into his stride once again, as will the actors.
The big mistake was having it in three parts... if shown as a whole 90 minute movie-esque show it would have been more successful and more appreciated. Dave however wanted ratings over three nights instead of one and alas it sort of disjointed the whole thing.
I'm really hoping that it leads to maybe another series or another special. Red Dwarf's been a big part of my life and it's made my year already just to see them back in action.

First episode was rubbish, i didn't laugh once and actually nodded off at one point. Second episode was hilarious, i loved every minute of it! Third episode a bit of both, some bits funny, other bits not so. Rimmer particularly annoyed me, but Cat was brilliant as usual. The way he shot out of the telly in that shop was a perfect Cat moment! I was left with a "oh, is that it?!" kinda feeling at the end though.

I've been a fan all my life and it was such a relief to see them on our screens again I agree. Although that relief gave way pretty darn quickly to annoyance It was actually funny, though some didn't get the subtle humour of it. Some find it hard without laugh tracks xD Dunno if that's aimed at me or not, but either way, there were some good gags but also a lot of crap ones. The scene in the shop was funny (apart from the whole "we're looking for Craig Charles" bit), the Psi Scan jokes were good, Katerina being pushed in front of the car and Rimmer's "as long as it's not my sister" gag were all pretty funny. The "guess who I've got here", the Space Corps Directive gag, as well as so many more fell flat on their arse though. This anniversary special was definately more dramatic than it maybe should have been. But then again it was a Celebration of red dwarf, it was for the fans who've waited these long ten years for them to return. That's the problem though. We've waited ten years for this, and it feels like it was knocked out in an afternoon. It was obviously done on a tight budget, and it wasn't the way to celebrate Red Dwarf at all. It felt like a massive advert for Dave and the RD merchandise... Plot wise, yes it had holes and yes, it could have been more original but this is hopefully a stepping stone for a new series. Doug will get into his stride once again, as will the actors. The actors can only work with what they're given. And seeing as Rob Grant left after series 6, which is the point where the quality started to degrade a little bit, it's clear where the "classic Dwarf" stuff came from. They need to lock Rob and Doug in a room, work out their differences and make series 10 (they said they're retiring series 9 before it's even made) The big mistake was having it in three parts... if shown as a whole 90 minute movie-esque show it would have been more successful and more appreciated. Dave however wanted ratings over three nights instead of one and alas it sort of disjointed the whole thing. I watched all 3 back-to-back and always intended to do so. I always saw it as one big thing, and it still felt like a letdown I'm really hoping that it leads to maybe another series or another special. Red Dwarf's been a big part of my life and it's made my year already just to see them back in action. I want there to be another series, but just somewhere that can have the money spent on it that NEEDS to be spent. Get a studio audience back there, get some of the classic writers back, spend a touch more money on some physical sets instead of relying on some pretty ropey (at times) CGI, and DON'T GO TO FUCKING CORONATION STREET. That entire plot line just ruined it for me. Me and the 3 guys who watched it with me (including 2 who are enormous RD fans, as am I) were all watching it just aghast at what they'd done to it

I thought overall it was very dissapointing. I liked the references to old episodes, like the 'I'm gonna eat you little fishy' and such, but felt that by the end it degenerated into a cheap Blade Runner parody, which was a bit bizarre.

I just watched all 3 back to back. Sure, it looked a little "cheap" at times but at the same time, you could tell it was filmed with much better technology ... most likely for HD etc. Overall, I liked it (even though EP 1 was shit).
Storyline was ok ... it was a classic "dream like" episode, but a story that has been done before elsewhere. Yes, I think it lacked a little in terms of a live audience and laughs and things, but I'm not sure they could've achieved the storyline any other way.
Whatever way you look at it ... we may have had a 10 year gap, but it's not like they've been writing it for 10 years is it?! Perhaps your expectations were too high?

Dunno if that's aimed at me or not Oh no, sorry. Reading it now it does seem that way but i didn't mean that at all, apologies. ;D It's just on the red dwarf forums people were saying they didn't find it funny with out the audience laughing with them. Bit silly really. Btw- like the Terroform avatar quote

It was an utter, steaming pile of shite. I liked all the previous Red Dwarfs, even series 7 and 8 which most people dislike, but these recent episodes were utterly, shockingly bad.
I think that anyone who actually thought they were funny has been desensitised to totally un-funny TV by the utter rubbish that passes for comedy on TV at the moment.
While I'm at it, Blackadder Back and Forth back at the turn of the millennium was wank too. Please, please - no more "new episodes" of classic comedies, it's a terrible idea.
