Feeder Fan Site will join a huge number of websites going offline tomorrow (Wednesday 18th January) for the anti-SOPA blackout in opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act, currently being proposed by the US Congress.
SOPA is a US bill that aims to give the US law enforcement and content owners an unprecedented degree of control over who uses their content in a bid to stop online piracy. However, this bill extends way beyond piracy, and will affect every fan site, blog, online community, and message board on the internet.
For example; if you were to post an image of an album cover online; you will be effectively breaching copyright law. Post lyrics or track listings on a forum and you will also be in breach. Live videos and covers will also be under scrutiny, as will reviews and opinions expressed of copyrighted material. Basically if a copyright holder doesn’t like what they see, they can have your content removed without any form of legal process.
Literally all of the content on websites such as this one will be seen as breaking copyright law and may be shut down.
Whilst we do not think for one minute that Feeder will ever change their fan-friendly stance on fan made websites and forums, the breadth of SOPA’s power is truly frightening for all internet users.
Feeder Fan Site does not condone piracy and will always help to prevent it in any way possible, but SOPA is not the solution, and must be stopped.
Major sites Wikipedia and Reddit will be joining thousands of websites for tomorrow’s blackout.
