I've now got a fear / dislike of supermarket petrol after the Tesco fuel that basically permanently damaged my engine Methinks you were just unlucky Pete, supermarkets take petrol from everywhere and anywhere they can, so one week you could be getting fuel from a Total refinery, the next from a BP, and the next from Texaco. Can't be fussed finding it but there was an article in Evo magazine a while back investigating supermarket fuel. One thing it did point out is that it's best getting fuel from a busy station because fuel absorbs water and deteriorates quickly when it's standing still, so using a petrol station that has to constantly be filled with new fuel means you're getting cleaner fuel. Back on topic, I found Jeremy Clarkson's comment on Top Gear yesterday interesting, looking at the fuel prices in a way I hadn't thought of before. As liquids go, fuel is actually quite reasonable. Even at the heavily taxed £1 a litre it's good, but at the actual 35p a litre price that's bloody good. Even Coca Cola is about 50p a litre or more. I guess people just use more fuel so notice it hitting the wallet more!

I reckon people only complain because they either have to buy it in bulk, and as such, the bill is pretty big each time or buy it really often. I'm also amused at when people get pissed at tiny price rises. I rise of 1p a litre for me is only gonna increase the bill by 45p (on current prices) if I fill the tank from empty. You'd spend that without blinking an eye on loads of other things.

The Texaco near us was closed last night because it had no diesel. So we had to go to Shell which only had 1 pump of normal diesel and two of some v-power diesel which was 6p more...f**k off!

I passed a Texaco station in Tivertn near Exeter last week - 107.9p.
Really pisses me off that even though it costs me £50 to properly fill my little 1.2l Punto now, it's still fucking cheaper to do 400 miles in that thn get a train.

I went to the Metro Centre last night and passed a petrol station at 99.9p per litre, so I took advantage and brimmed my car with £45.02 of petrol before my long journey to Birmingham on thursday.

My estimate for petrol cost to get to Birmingham and back... about £65... And that's if I drive without air-con and without planting my foot. (won't happen).
But that all depends on how expensive the petrol is at a motorway service station on the way back up.

Think that works out at around 70/80p a litre?
I'm still so getting a motorcycle. 80mpg even when thrashing it here I come...

But that all depends on how expensive the petrol is at a motorway service station on the way back up. sorry to state the obvious, but I'd so be trying to buy petrol in places away from service stations!! I've got two return trips to Brum coming up too. 320 mile round trips, so that'll be a tank for each journey I suspect!

(won't happen) Try not planting your foot and save a bit of petrol, as opposed to using loads of it and then complaining about the price... And aircon... in this weather? Absolutely no need to use the aircon to heat the car in this weather, use the normal heater.

I'll have to fill up at some point, I suspect if i see a petrol station while i'm down there with cheap-ish petrol in it then i'll get some from there. I didn't plan on using air-con anyway. But I'm not quite used to the heating in my car yet, I'm not sure where the ideal temp is As for not planting it... it is me we're talking about here although I do it safely oh, and I complain about the price because I'm British. The only 2 things the British are good at is: 1. Moaning 2. Queuing.

i'll have to fill up on the way back up here at some point. got a 45-50L tank on a 1.6l Ford Focus, does about 45mpg. I can't be arsed to do the sums and figure out how far that'll get me

whatever ... but what I am saying is, fill up before you get on the motorway!! A full tank of fuel, in that kind of car, should be capable of at the very least 300 miles. Unless you really have got a lead right foot

I can't be arsed to do the sums and figure out how far that'll get me Out of a 40 litre tank in my car, 45mpg equates to about 350 miles (I'm managaed to eek about 380 out of it before - 48mpg), so in theory you should be able to get around 380 miles from your tank, maybe more if you drove like a saint. f you do zoom about everywhere, I'd be surprised if you average more than 30-35mpg. Bear in mind 45mpg is a manufacturer quote, and as such is usually around 20% wrong when it comes to everyday driving unless you've really got a knack for saving fuel.

I have the knack for using fuel...... the 45mpg is a rough motorway guess. Usually it's down at 35ish... but it doesn't tell me like the Yaris does... not that the Yaris was accurate in any way.

perhaps you should leave the driving fast and hard to your games and drive normally in real life ?

oh i don't drive fast... I don't break speed limits because I can't afford to I just like to put my foot down sometimes and have a bit of fun (note: when I know it's safe to do so)
