news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7533389.stm35% increase ? 35% INCREASE ?! 35% INCREASE?!Fuck off British Gas! That is extortionate ... I've been meaning to move my gas supplier to Southern Electric (who provide my Electric supply) for a while, so I could get the dual fuel discount and this has just sealed it. As if we weren't suffering enough as a result of increased prices for everything else and now this! When is it going to end ??!

I'm thanking my lucky stars. Earlier that morning I JUST signed up to British Gas Price Guarantee Dec 2009, which - if the price of their Click 5 tariff increases by 35% - will mean I shall have made the right choice.
I just hope BG honour the contract as I only signed up a matter of hours before the announcement.
Pete - just as a point of advice. Ring Scottish Power or E-on ASP - they're the only two offering capped tariffs any longer and the current BG 2011 one is a joke. If you move to Southern Electric for gas, it's still going to be as expensive in the long run. Utility suppliers have a herd mentality - as soon as one ups their prices, so do the rest by the same degree if not more. It's because they all have to buy their gas reserves from the same stock, the price of which has doubled in recent months.

It's because they all have to buy their gas reserves from the same stock, the price of which has doubled in recent months. I realise that all Utility Companies will put their prices up eventually ... I'm not that daft. I also realise that SE haven't announced anything yet. However, by switching to them, I'll be getting dual fuel discounts (8%), which will lessen the blow of any tariff increases which they impose later. I've also been very impressed with SE so far. At the end of last years direct debit payments, they owned me £65. Which they put back into my bank account within 2 days. At the end of last years payments to British Gas, they owed me £80 ish and instead of giving it me back, they wanted to increase my monthly payment by 58%!!! This does not compute ... I just hope I can switch soon ... I've tried to switch online and their website keeps crashing. I gave them a call and they said they had their entire building taking phone calls from people wanting to switch, purely due to British Gas' announcement!! haha ...

i'm gonna use uswitch.com as their site seems to be working. It suggests that by moving to SE for dual fuel I will be saving £173 a year Not the best saving I can get, but it's not far off and I only want to change the gas supplier, not both. At least, not for the time being.

Sweet! Nice one.
I just tried moneysupermarket and energyhelpline and both their sites are down. Obviously there's a load of unhappy BG customers trying to switch.
Also, I just read on the news that Centrica made profits of 1billion! Hiking prices up seems pretty rich to me!

It is if you stick a hot poker up their ass.
How any company can complain about the market and increasing costs whilst recovering those costs from the consumer in order to post record profits every. single. year. is completely beyond me.

Nah, we all know industry fat cats burn puppies, kittens and children's tears as fuel, so they can't be needing the gas.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand British Gas have upped my monthly Direct Debit from £32.40 a month to £50 a month, WITHOUT EVEN TELLING ME OR ASKING MY PERMISSION FIRST?!?!
Thank christ that Southern Electrics website has finally allowed me to make an application to switch!
Jeeeesus ... how exactly do British Gas think this is way to do business?! I'll be surprised if they have an customers left soon.

they're all pushing their prices up tho. We were with EDF until a couple of months ago and our monthly payments went up from 42.50 to 75 quid for the leccy and £28 to £58 for the gas. We decided to switch and wish we hadn't now, 'cos guess who we've gone to?...... yep, British Gas! ARGH! They've already cocked up. I sent them the direct debit form which they confirmed they'd received and then this week they've sent us our first bills for 2 months worth of leccy and gas. They haven't been taking out the bloody direct debits have they?! useless bastards! Now we've got to find over 300 quid by next week to pay them. We've just come back from holiday, its Dans 21st in a couple of weeks, we really dont have 300 quid just going spare. God, i give up. We'll be switching to someone else pronto, thank god we didn't sign up to a minimum timeframe contract! Ill be checking my bank statements more closely in future too. I hadn't even noticed that they weren't taking out the payments. doh!

Yeah, then took three months worth of £83 payments out two days before the rent was due, resulting in being overdrawn.
